: Directory FAQ Frequently asked questions about the new Palacetools.com Live Directory.

Q. My Palace used to be on the Directory, but now it isn't. What happened?

A. Read the important Directory announcement located here:
http://www.palacetools.com/list/announce.html

Q. Where can I find step-by-step instructions for adding my Palace to the Directory?

A. Instructions for adding your Palace to the directory can be found at:
http://www.palacetools.com/list/getlisted.html

Q. Where can I find platform-specific instructions for adding my Palace to the Directory?

A. Platform-specific instructions for adding your Palace to the directory can be found at:
http://www.palacetools.com/list/

Q. How is the Directory sorted?

A. By default, the Directory now sorts by users in descending order. There are new Pull-down menus on the left side of the page that will allow you to change the way the directory is sorted.

Q. Is there a way to toggle listings?

A. The New Directory has three viewing modes: Preview, List, and Compact. The default mode when you first arrive at the page is Preview mode. You can change to List mode or Compact mode by selecting these items in the View pull-down menu near the top of the page.

Q. How do I stop the errors in my server log?

A. The new static IP and server for the Live Directory has been established at 71.155.186.91. Those who are running Palace servers can change your Hosts files to point to that IP address. For further assistance, please see:
http://practice.chatserve.com/hosts.html

Q. My Palace is hosted with a hosting company. Is it the host's responsibility or mine to change the Hosts file?

A. The host will redirect the hosts file for ALL of their Palaces.

Q. My palace was listing on the Old Directory. Why isn't it listing on the new Directory?

A. The new Directory is just that, New. It is running on a new server, has all new code, and depending on your current setup, you will need to change your Hosts file so that it directs directory.thepalace.com to the new directory. Click here for detailed instructions on how to do this. If you have been using the QUIKLIST code in your pserver.prefs's SYSOP field, you will need to acquire a new code to replace the QUIKLIST code you have been using. Click here for detailed instruction on how to do this.

Q. Why do I need to change my hosts file again?

A. The new Directory is running on a new, faster server. The new server has a different IP address than the old server we were using. We regret the inconvenience this may cause you, but in the long run it will be well worth the trouble.

Q. Why doesn't my QUIKLIST code work? It always worked with the old Directory.

A. The QUIKLIST code was always meant to be a temporary way for palaces to be listed on the old Directory. The new Directory has many features that require your palace to have a unique code that only your palace uses. It would be impossible to allow you to customize your palace info if everybody used the QUIKLIST code. We have made it very easy for you to get a new, unique code. Just fill in a couple of fields, click and the new code will be emailed to you ASAP. Click here for detailed instructions on how to do this.

Q. The host file redirect which I used before, and which I believe went to a palacetools addy, no longer works. Is there a new redirect addy for registering a Personal Server Palace?

A. The new static IP and server for the Live Directory has been established at 71.155.186.91. Those who are running Palace servers can change your Hosts files to point to that IP address. For further assistance, please see:
http://practice.chatserve.com/hosts.html

Q. How can I link my InstantPalace URL in the directory?

A. Linux or Unix 4.4.1 or newer servers:

To include your InstantPalace URL and get the little IP button to appear on the Live Directory, you need to put the URL for your InstantPalace page in the TPVENTRYPAGE field, either manually or with the `entrypage command. The URL should include the "http://" The palace URL is read from the URL field.

Below is an example of what the setting looks like in a 4.4.1 or newer pserver.prefs file:

SYSOP "QUIKLIST"
URL "palace://crossroads.hotcity.com:9998"
TPVENTRYPAGE "http://www.crossroads.hotcity.com/palace/client/instantpal.html"
Windows 4.4 servers:

To include your InstantPalace URL and get the little IP button to appear on the Live Directory, in the Windows 4.4 server application go to Options Menu, Preferences, The Palace Viewer tab, select the box next to "Let me specify my own entry page", and put the complete InstantPalace URL (including the "http://") in the field labelled "The entry page for this palace is at:", and then click OK.

Updates can take as long as 30 minutes to appear on the Live Directory.

Q. I'm using a Mac and Internet Explorer, and I'm having trouble connecting to some of the Palaces on the Directory, even though I know they are up and running. What's wrong?

A. Microsoft has never fixed a problem with Internet Explorer regarding handling Palace protocol for non-default ports (anything other than port 9998), so through version 5.0, Internet Explorer for Mac won't work for some Palace C-client links. If it isn't working for any Palace protocol links, including Port 9998 Palaces, try the following procedure.

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Go to Edit Menu/Preferences
  3. Click on Protocol Helpers (on the left - you may have to scroll down to see it)
  4. Click the "Add" button
  5. Type in palace next to "Helper for:"
  6. Click the "Choose Helper" button and navigate to your Palace application
  7. Click OK, then click OK again

Internet Explorer should now work for palace protocol web links for port 9998 Palaces. If you encounter a non-default port Palace address (a Palace address that uses anything other than port 9998), Internet Explorer will not display the port number in the status bar (bottom bar of browser where messages appear) when your mouse passes over the link. To see the actual address defined on the web page, you can View Source by going to View Menu/Source, or press command-E. Another option would be to try Netscape for accessing the Directory. Tests with Mac Netscape 4.76 indicate that Palace links work without modifications for both both port 9998 Palaces and non-default port Palaces.

Q. I read everything on this page, but I still need help. What can I do?

A. Please email Palacetools.com Contact Page and include as much of the following information as possible:

Operating System and version (examples: linux 2.0.36, Windows 98 SE)
Palace Server Version (examples: linux 4.5.1 build 29, Windows 4.4 build 19)
